FACIL, pour l'appropriation collective de l'informatique, the Koumbit network and LabCMO (computer mediated communication Laboratory) are pleased to invite you to the Copyright Day 2005, Copyright and you, on Sunday, July 3rd 2005 to discuss the issues about copyright law. M. Richard Stallman, president of the Free Software Foundation will be giving a speech: "Copyright vs Community in the Age of Computer Networks."
Easyness of reproduction allowed by digital information technologies leads to the need of important changes in the copyright laws that were initially developed for the printing press. While many important groups are looking for laws or technical ways to artificially reduce these new possibilities for redistribution, other groups, like the Free Software movement and the Free Culture movement propose to center cultural production and innovation on greater reproduction possibilities.
The Copyright 2005 day will allow attendees to better understand these issues and to get to know people involved in actions about free reproduction of information. A dozen groups which will have kiosks on the premises and the following lecturers will be present: Richard Stallman (Free Software Foundation), Russell McOrmond (Flora), Marcus Bornfreund (Creative Commons Canada), Daniel Pascot (in charge of a research project on free software for the Conseil du Trésor du Québec), Cyrille Béraud (Savoir-faire Linux) and Robin Millette (FACIL).
This activity will contribute to widen the debate about Bill C-60, introduced on June 20th by the Canadian Parliament. This bill proposes a deep reform of the Copyright law which aims to ratify World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) treaties from 1996. Around two thousand people already opposed this bill by signing a petition asking the Canadian parliament to not only aknowledge the authors and publishers rights but also the users's rights.
This event will also be the occasion to announce the second Semaine québécoise de l'informatique libre, a Quebec Free Software Week which will be held from November 12th until November 20th 2005. Medias are invited at 6 pm for a press conference presented by the organizer committee of the Semaine québécoise de l'informatique libre (SQIL).
Copyright 2005 Day will be held on Sunday 3rd July from 1 pm to 10 pm at Université du Québec à Montréal, room DS-R510. The event will start at 1 pm with the opening of a dozen kiosks. Richard Stallman's speech will start at 6:30 pm. The panel will begin at 8 pm and finish around 10 pm with the public's questions.
